The opal is a mineral of the oxide and hydroxide class. As an amorphous solid, opal (like glass) has no crystal structure and typically occurs as a massy vein filling or nodular formation.
Opals are exclusively processed into jewelry stones.
The word opal is borrowed from Latin opalus or from Greek ὀπάλλιος opallios for ‘precious stone’ and presumably goes back to upala or Sanskrit. According to Allan W. Eckert in his work The World of Opals, it was used for various rocks, while the early Magyars called opal mines opálbánya nan... (note: truncated in original)
Opals were regarded as particularly valuable gemstones in antiquity, some even valued higher than diamonds. Pliny the Elder wrote about it: “[…] it has a fire of its own, the refined spark of the amethyst, the sea-green of the emerald, and an utterly incredible play of light.”
