Description from the seller
Originating from Spain or the south of France, this distinctive piece once served for monetary transactions and for keeping trade records. Its low, stout profile, characteristic of workshop furniture from this period, rests on a massive base connected by a particularly robust H-shaped stretchers, assembled with visible mortise-and-tenon joints that guarantee secular stability.
The front of the single drawer is the centerpiece of this furniture. It is adorned with two radiating rosettes carved in bas-relief directly from the mass, an emblematic solar motif of Baroque art symbolizing prosperity.
The security aspect, essential for a money-exchange desk, is assured by original forged-iron ironwork. One finds a central, imposing lock entrance and an organically shaped pull ring. Inside the drawer, the mortise bolt lock mechanism is still in place, fixed by authentic hand-forged nails and rivets.
The broad overhanging top presents a deep patina and a finish nourished by the centuries, revealing marks of life and the old pegs that give it its soul. One observes a triangular wear/restoration pattern, an ancient and stabilized restoration that testifies to the care given to preserving this piece through the ages.
With its generous dimensions (Height 58 cm, Width 104 cm, Depth 55 cm), this money-changer’s desk can today be superbly repurposed as a monumental coffee table or a prestigious sideboard for a collector’s interior.
This authentic piece is presented in its used condition, with a sound structure despite signs of wear.
Considering its dimensions, this piece will be shipped via FedEx (An economically viable option can of course be proposed by the buyer)
