This copperplate engraved map depicts Italy, Greece, the Aegean Sea, the west coast of Asia Minor (Troy) and the coast of North Africa (Carthage). The map is based on Virgil’s epic poem Aeneis and traces Aeneas’s route following the fall of Troy.
Aeneas is one of the central figures of Greek and Roman mythology and is regarded as the mythical progenitor of the Romans. His adventurous journey is the central theme of the Roman national epic, the Aeneis, which was written by the poet Virgil.
