Description from the seller

39 cm with pedestal

The Ekuk mask of the Kwele (Congo, Gabon, Cameroon) is distinguished by its geometric, elongated form, often evoking the face of a monkey or a fantastical creature with streamlined features. Unlike naturalistic masks, the Ekuk favors a stylized abstraction, with a prominent forehead and almond-shaped eyes, symbolizing vital force and the link with the world of the ancestors.

Used during initiation ceremonies and rites of passage, this mask embodies the figure of the “man-monkey,” representing both the wildness to be tamed and ancestral wisdom. Its fabrication, often associated with secret societies, involves materials such as wood, red ochre and plant fibers.

Today, the Ekuk is internationally recognized as a masterpiece of African abstract art, though its exact interpretation varies according to the Kwele subgroups and the historical contexts of collection.
