Chez les Kongo, le nganga se chargeait des rituels en activant une force spirituelle avec un nkisi (pl. minkisi). Le terme de nkisi fut ensuite employé pour désigner les notions de "sacré" ou "divin". La catégorie la plus influente des "minkisi kongo" še composait d'instruments destinés à aider les chefs régionaux à faire respecter la loi. On clouait un objet en métal sur une figure en bois dès qu'une décision était prise, chaque clou évoquant un cas particulier: parties en litige, divorce, conflits entre communautés...

Le nkondi voulait ainsi s'assurer que l'accord devant règler le conflit était bien appliqué, et que les individus redoutent les conséquences de leur comportement. Son apparence personnifiait donc la force y résidant.
