For those unfamiliar with Vienna Bronzes, as the name implies, this phenomenon originated in Vienna, Austria, in the mid-19th century.
Characteristic is that these are highly detailed solid bronze figurines, often small animal figures, which were painted by hand. These were very popular with collectors and the wealthy, so that at its peak, around 1900, as many as 80 specialized artists worked in Vienna.
Unfortunately, many Vienna Bronzes suffered a sad fate, in both world wars countless statuettes were melted down for the benefit of the metal needed for the artillery.
