Chinese Bronze Stamp Set with Protectors of the Four Winds
This rare set of four antique bronze stamps represents the mythological guardians of the four cardinal directions (四神 - Sì Shén) from Chinese cosmology.
Each stamp is crowned with one of the four celestial animals that guard the cardinal directions:
East: The Azure Dragon (青龍 - Qīng Lóng) - depicted on the right, symbol of spring and wood
West: The White Tiger (白虎 - Bái Hǔ) - seen on the left, represents autumn and metal
North: The Black Tortoise with Snake (玄武 - Xuán Wǔ) - possibly the second figure, stands for winter and water
South: The Red Phoenix or Bird (朱雀 - Zhū Què) - the third animal, symbolises summer and fire
Each mythological creature rests on a square bronze base with Chinese characters that probably indicate the wind direction or blessing. The seals were traditionally used for protection, blessing documents, or in feng shui practices.
