Masque de famille - Gouro - Côte d'Ivoire
Miniature masks, also called "passport masks," are carved to welcome ancestral spirits, just like the larger masks.
Their main function is to protect the person who wears it, especially against sorcery.
But it can also be used for divination or as an altar object for which offerings can be made.
Finally, it helps attest the wearer's rank, as well as their lineage, in regions where it is not known.
Close to passport masks, the so-called "family" or "house" masks, slightly larger in size, intended to be hung on the walls of the hut.
