Seventeenth‑century frame in walnut burl veneer with blackened wood mouldings from the Netherlands, dating to around 1600–1650, external 47 × 43 cm with an internal opening of 21 × 16.5 cm, in good condition with age‑related wear and marks, suitable to receive a mirror or an old painting or to be displayed as architectural woodwork.
Description from the seller
XVIIth-century frame in walnut burl and darkened wood.
Beautiful 17th-century antique frame, in burl walnut veneer highlighted by blackened wooden moldings, featuring a highly architectural composition with successive retreats.
The front offers a striking sense of depth thanks to a succession of recessed and protruding profiles, arranged around a central opening. The wide burl strips, mitred, reveal a rich natural decor, animated by the swirling grain of the walnut, in warm brown-mahogany tones. The darkened moldings, sober yet nerve-racking, emphasize the frame’s structure and recall the precious surrounds of the 17th century, where the contrast between dark wood and figured veneer was particularly sought after.
The back, preserved in its original state, shows a traditional construction built from large wooden elements joined together. It bears a fine patina of use, with old fastening marks, small xylophagous holes, cracks, wear, and old handwritten marks, all elements bearing witness to its antiquity.
Beautiful decorative and collectible object, capable of receiving a mirror, an antique painting, or being presented as is for its architectural character and material.
