Description from the seller
Carved wooden plaque of Bécassine - vintage Breton decorative mould - 20th century
Beautiful solid wood plaque carved to depict Bécassine, the iconic Breton character from the French comics. Decorative piece or old butter/cake mold, very well crafted.
Detailed description:
For sale a very fine carved wooden plaque representing Bécassine, the famous character created in 1905 by Jacqueline Rivière and drawn by Joseph Porphyre Pinchon.
This solid wood piece (probably walnut or oak given the warm hue and grain) is finely carved in relief. It shows Bécassine in the traditional Breton costume: coif, ruff, apron, skirts, sabots and basket. The naive, smiling face is particularly expressive.
At the bottom of the plaque, the name “BÉCASSINE” is carved in relief (in mirror, typical of old molds so that the imprint appears upright). A hanging hole is present at the top, allowing easy display as wall decoration.
Style: Breton popular art / vintage brocante object
Era: Mid / late 20th century
Origin: France (Brittany)
Condition:
Very good overall condition. Lovely patina, some signs of wear and scratches typical of age and use (see detailed photos). No cracks or major restoration visible. Ready to hang or display.
Dimensions (to be completed with your measurements):
Ideal for:
• Bécassine fans and Breton culture enthusiasts
• Collectors of folk objects and antique molds
• Rustic or ethnic decor
• Fans of French popular art
Unique and charming piece, perfect for a collection or as a distinctive gift.
