Description from the seller
Nicolas de Staël (St. Petersburg, January 5, 1914 – Antibes, March 16, 1955) a French painter of Baltic-German origin. He studied in Brussels at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts. In the thirties he made several journeys around Europe. During a trip to the Netherlands (1933) he studied the painting styles of Rembrandt, Hercules Segers and Philips Koninck. In 1934 he lived in Paris and visited the Midi, where he discovered works by Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque and Chaïm Soutine. His first exhibition took place in 1936 at Galerie Dietrich in Brussels. Somewhere in 1940 he must have met his future gallery owner Jeanne Bucher, as well as the artists Alberto Magnelli, Sonia Delaunay, Hans Arp and Le Corbusier. In September 1942 the de Staël family moved to Paris and Nicolas began to work completely abstractly. His first exhibition took place at Galerie Jeanne Bucher, as did the second (1944), in the company of painters Wassily Kandinsky and César Domela Nieuwenhuis. After the liberation of Paris (still at Bucher) in 1945 there came the first recognition of his work in a solo exhibition. He met painters André Lanskoy and Georges Braque and joined the Nouvelle École de Paris.
The two present catalogs are in good condition; the Pompidou copy has a few small flaws: a corner crease on the bottom right / a small damp spot at the bottom of the first flyleaf, see photo no. 5.
