Description from the seller
Exceptionally dedicated and signed first edition on the title page by Mimmo Jodice (1934 - 2025), unique original edition and impossible to find on the internet in a signed copy, extremely rare in an unsigned copy. 192 pages and 46 black-and-white photographs printed full page. Introductory texts in Italian and English by Richard Burdett, professor of architecture and urban planning, and by Cornelia Lauf, art critic, exhibition curator, and professor at IUAV in Venice. Solid publisher’s hardcover binding with illustrated dust jacket and titled cardboard slipcase. In excellent condition (practically like new).
Rome has always inspired photographers, but Mimmo Jodice waited many years before embarking on a project about Rome; however, many of his previous works, especially his studies on the myth of the Mediterranean, can be regarded as preparatory work for the “myth” of Rome. Jodice explores the visual impact of the majestic ruins of the ancient city, the Rome of the Renaissance and Baroque, and even the modern city, leading the reader on a long journey through time and history. These photographs of extraordinary definition were taken with a view camera, and Mimmo Jodice printed them himself in his darkroom.
Mimmo Jodice is one of the greatest Italian photographers of the 20th century and has gained international recognition around the world; his architectural photographs were made on the occasion of exhibitions that allowed him to travel widely. A self-taught photographer born in 1934 in Naples, he began his artistic activity in the mid-1960s with visual experimentation, creating cut-and-paste image studies, and then in the 1970s moved toward social denunciation related to the miserable living conditions of Naples’ population, a vibrant and popular city, and in the 1980s toward a silent evocation of the metaphysical landscape and Mediterranean archaeology, with a creative language that reflects on time, light, and the act of seeing itself. In 1983-1984 Mimmo Jodice also participated in the “Viaggio in Italia” project with Luigi Ghirri and about ten other emerging Italian photographers at the time, such as Guido Guidi, Mario Cresci, Olivo Barbieri, Vittore Fossati. Mimmo Jodice has presented his work in France on several occasions, notably within the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d'Arles, as well as during a retrospective at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris in 2010, which led to the publication of an important catalogue.
