Victorian balloon-back chair in stained and polished walnut with moss-green velvet upholstery, dating from circa 1850–1880, stamped J.B / C.W on the underside, likely of English origin, with dimensions: height 88 cm, width 44 cm, depth 51 cm.
Description from the seller
Victorian Balloon-Back Chair in stained and polished walnut, stamped J.B / C.W, c. 1850–1880
A charming and elegant Victorian side chair with a sculptural outline, warm patina and a drop-in moss-green velvet upholstered seat.
The chair has a lovely silhouette: an open balloon-shaped back with a softly undulating top rail, curved rear supports, turned front legs and sabre-shaped back legs. The frame has a lovely rhythm of curves and carved profiles, giving the piece a refined but not overly formal character. The polished wood has a warm reddish-brown tone with attractive age-related patina.
Underneath the seat frame, the chair is stamped J.B / C.W. This same mark is known on comparable Victorian balloon-back chairs, although the precise maker or workshop behind the initials has not been securely identified. It is therefore best understood as an interesting period stamp, possibly a maker’s, workshop, retailer’s or assembly mark.
The chair is upholstered in moss-green velvet, most probably redone around the 1950s or 1960s. The fabric remains in good condition and pairs beautifully with the warm mahogany, giving the chair an atmospheric presence.
A lovely single chair to place as a side chair in a classic interior, hallway or library. It would also work very well in an eclectic interior, where the 19th-century form can add a layer of history and character.
Condition
Very good antique condition. The chair is stable, sturdy and ready to use. The wooden frame shows normal signs of age and use, including small marks, patina and minor wear consistent with its age. The velvet upholstery is in good vintage condition.
