Description from the seller

An antique carved oak drop-front desk or bureau, probably dating from the end of the 19th century or the early 20th century.

The piece is a Secretary Desk, also commonly known as a bureau, with a hinged slanted front that drops down to create a writing surface.
Material and finish: The desk is made of dark finished oak wood, a commonly used material for this style and period.

Woodcarving: The most striking are the intricate relief engravings on the panels of the two large drawers under the desk portion, on the stiles (vertical supports) at the corners and along the lower edge. These floral- or scroll-like engravings are indicative of the Jacobean Revival style.

Legs: It stands on distinctive turned legs, which are consistent with the Jacobean style.
Hardware: The drawers are fitted with round brass handles and keyholes. The drop-front also has a central keyhole and brass hardware along the upper edge.

Potential origin/period: The heavy carving and the use of oak suggest an English or French provincial origin, probably produced during a revival of earlier styles (Jacobean or Louis XVI Country French) in the late 1800s to early 1900s.

Dimensions: h. 90, w. 91 and d. 45 cm
In good condition with signs of wear

Seller's Story

If something moves me, I buy it. It’s that simple, really. Since 2008 I scour here and abroad, always looking for that one object with a soul. Whether it’s an ancient antique piece or modern design: if it radiates craftsmanship and character, I’m hooked. I enjoy giving these finds a new home. Take a look around, and I hope my passion for quality touches you as well.
