An elegant and highly decorative set of seven hand-carved Chinese wooden scholar figures, representing the legendary Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove (竹林七贤) — one of the most celebrated themes in Chinese literati culture.
Made of boxwood.
The figures stand on a wooden stand (varying in light and dark color).
All are very finely worked, giving a beautifully realistic whole.
Take a look at the details, including the hands, faces and robes.
Furthermore, the figures display traditional literati attributes, including scrolls and bamboo slips, a wine vessel and a musical instrument.
Height about 14-16 cm and width 5 cm; due to the different figures the measurements are slightly different for each.
The whole is still in very nice condition (with only very slight wear due to age).
