Icon - Nicholas the Wonderworker - Wood

Saint Nicholas of Myra, one of the most venerated saints in the Russian Orthodox tradition.

In the Cyrillic inscription one can read:

«Св. Николай» = “Saint Nicholas”
«Чудотворец» = “the Wonderworker” or “Miracle Worker”

At the top appear:

Christ handing him the Gospel
The Virgin Mary presenting him with the episcopal omophorion

This composition is characteristic of traditional icons of Saint Nicholas and alludes to the divine legitimization of his episcopate.
