Tanzanite is a blue to violet variety of the mineral Zoisite. Like the pink Thulite variety, it is used exclusively as a gemstone.
Like Zoisite, Tanzanite crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and typically forms transparent, prismatic to columnar crystals that can reach several centimeters in length and exhibit a glassy luster on their surfaces. The cleavage faces, by contrast, shimmer more pearlescent.
