Peridot, also called chrysolite, is a particularly pure variety of the mineral olivine. The light green, transparent mineral is used as a gemstone.

Peridot is the magnesium-rich form of olivine (forsterite) with a composition approaching Mg2SiO4. Its crystals are orthorhombic, and its hardness is slightly lower than that of quartz.

Peridot is of light green color with a range from yellow-green to olive green. Brown varieties are also known. Peridot is sometimes confused with emerald and other green gemstones, such as chrysoberyl, diopside, moldavite, as well as garnet (demantoid), quartz (prasiolite, prasem) and tourmaline varieties (chromolith, verdelit).

Already in the Old Testament Peridot (pitdah) is mentioned, and in ancient Rome the stone was valued as an “evening emerald” because it can be illuminated by lamp light. In the Middle Ages Peridot was often part of church jewelry; presumably Peridot stones were brought to Europe by Crusaders. The stone was attributed healing powers, as well as the power to drive away evil spirits.
