Origin of the Cavallino Rampante

Ferrari’s black horse did not originate in Maranello, but in the skies of World War I. The emblem was originally the personal symbol of Count Francesco Baracca, an Italian air force ace who painted a prancing horse on the fuselage of his fighter plane. After his death in 1918, the symbol was forever linked to his heroic memory.

Years later, Enzo Ferrari would recall the decisive moment that would give new life to the horse. After winning a race on the Savio circuit, he met the pilot’s parents, who suggested using the emblem on his cars as a symbol of good luck.

On July 9, 1932, at the 24 Hours of Spa, the Alfa Romeo cars of Scuderia Ferrari wore the Cavallino Rampante for the first time. The horse that once roamed the skies would begin to gallop on four wheels.
