Italian-made glazed ceramic sculpture of a seated leopard, signed, in mid‑century modern / Hollywood Regency style, measuring 60 cm high by 30 cm wide and 26 cm deep.
Description from the seller
This statue is a classic example of decorative artistic ceramics, Italian manufacture in the style of Bassano or the famous, dating back to the mid-20th century (the 1960s/70s).
Here is a detailed, point-by-point description:
1. Subject and Pose
The sculpture depicts a leopard seated on its hind legs. The animal is portrayed in an aggressive or warning posture: its mouth is open in a roar, showing teeth, pronounced canines and the tongue. The gaze is directed slightly upward, giving a proud and dynamic presence.
2. Colors and Decoration
The piece stands out for an unusual and stylized coloration:
Base color: The body is not the classic yellow-gold, but features a shade that shifts from cream white to pink/purple (particularly visible on the muzzle, chest, and along the back).
Spott ing: The spots are a deep black, distributed irregularly but harmoniously. On the face they are small dots, while on the body they become larger and oval, imitating the natural pattern of the feline.
Eyes: A striking detail is the color of the eyes, a very vivid acid/yellowish-green that contrasts with the pinkish tones of the muzzle.
3. Material and Finish
Material: Glazed ceramic
Finish: The surface features a very reflective glossy glaze that accentuates the sculpture’s curves and gives it a luxurious and "pop" appearance.
4. Style and Placement
This type of giant sculptures (often called "Hollywood Regency" or "Mid-Century Modern") were iconic pieces for entrances of villas or elegant living rooms between the 1960s and 1980s. Today they are highly sought-after collectibles for maximalist or vintage decorating.
