Black opals occur, just like their differently colored counterparts, as roundish to knoll-like masses with no recognizable crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only when the surface is polished. Characteristic of this form of opal is its opalescence, which shows up as an intense rainbow shimmer. Moreover, the host rock of the opal here is dark, grayish to black, which gave it this name.

Black opals form, like other opals, from siliceous fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions inside this mineral.
