Characteristic for this form of opals is their opalescence, which is especially evident in a vivid rainbow sheen. Additionally, the host rock of the opal here is dark, grayish to black, which gave it this name.
Black opals are formed, just like other opals, from silica-rich liquids that crystallize in sediments or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions inside this mineral.
