Vintage wooden monobloc school desk with integrated chair, dating from 1930–1940, featuring a black lacquered tubular steel frame, a wooden top with a storage compartment, and hand‑painted nautical Folk Art imagery, in good used condition with signs of age.
Description from the seller
Vintage Industrial Monobloc School Desk - Hand-Painted Folk Art "HMS Valiant" (c. 1950-1960)
Exclusive monobloc school desk with integrated chair from the mid-20th century, a classic piece of industrial educational design converted into a unique decorative object thanks to meticulous hand-painted Folk Art style work.
The frame is made of black lacquered steel tubing, lending the solidity typical of school furniture of the era. The upper body is wood and features a lift-top lid that provides access to a large interior storage compartment, preserving the original wooden stop at the bottom to prevent pencils or writing objects from falling.
The great appeal of this piece lies in its detailed hand-painted maritime iconography:
Top lid: Central illustration of the historic British ship HMS Valiant sailing, framed by golden wavy borders.
Sides and profiles: Calligraphic inscription with the year "1850".
Chair: Custom backrest with the word "MATE" and seat decorated to match the overall aesthetic of the set.
Due to its rarity, originality, and dual appealing aspect (collectors of school furniture and nautical or interior design enthusiasts), it is an ideal piece for display window projects as well as to add a distinctive touch to design studios or private spaces.
Condition
Good overall condition with signs of use and natural wear due to age, which gives it an authentic patina highly valued in the vintage market. The metal frame is solid and the lift-top mechanism is fully functional. The paint shows organic aging that reinforces its unique character. Please view the images for a detailed assessment.
