Edvard Munch – Curt Glaser / Edvard Munch (illustrations)
Berlin: Verlag von Bruno Cassirer, 1917. Frontispiece, [6], 191, [1] pages. 25.7cm x 18.7cm. Hardcover with yellow cloth binding and apricot-coloured boards, with a printed front board, lettered spine, and dark brown top edge. First edition of this first comprehensive German monograph analyzing the life and revolutionary style of Norwegian Expressionist painter Edvard Munch. Written by his close friend and prominent art critic Dr. Curt Glaser, it guides the reader through Munch’s intense psychological themes—such as anxiety, love, and death—while deeply exploring his pioneering techniques in oil painting and graphic printmaking. Comes with an original etching of Edvard Munch (a portrait study of a bearded man) which serves as the frontispiece and includes a tissue guard. The book is illustrated throughout with black and white in-text illustrations and numerous plates depicting Munch’s work at the end.
Slight rubbing, bumping, wear, spotting, and tanning to the boards and spine. Pencil markings on the back pastedown endpaper. Scattered pencil markings throughout. Some browning and spotting throughout. The text is clear, the original etching and illustrations are in wonderful condition, and the binding is solid. Overall, a handsome copy in very good condition.
