Peridot, also called chrysolite, is a particularly pure variety of the mineral olivine. The light-green, transparent mineral is used as a gemstone.
Peridot is the magnesium-rich variety of olivine (forsterite) with a composition close to Mg2SiO4. Its crystals are orthorhombic, and its hardness is slightly lower than that of quartz.
Peridot is of light green color with a range from lime green to olive green. Brown varieties are also known. Peridot is sometimes confused with emerald and other green gemstones, such as chrysoberyl, diopside, moldavite, as well as garnet (demantoid), quartz (prasiolite, prasem) and tourmaline varieties (chromolith, verdelite).
Already in the Old Testament Peridot (as pitdah) is mentioned, and in ancient Rome the stone was valued as the “evening emerald” because it easily brightens under lamp light. In the Middle Ages Peridot often formed part of church jewelry; presumably Peridot stones were brought to Europe by Crusaders.
