Description from the seller
An elegant late Victorian presentation walking cane, the slender shaft of dark-toned timber with naturally developed age patina, surmounted by a simple crook handle and mounted with an ornate silver presentation plaque bearing London hallmarks for 1898.
The silver mount is attractively executed in relief with scrolling foliate ornament framing a finely engraved German dedication inscription, lending the piece both decorative appeal and historical character. The inscription, commemorative in nature, enhances the object’s period authenticity and evokes the tradition of late 19th-century presentation canes bestowed as personal or ceremonial gifts.
The restrained simplicity of the form allows the quality of the silverwork and the attractive aged character of the timber to take precedence, resulting in an object of understated elegance and strong historical charm.
Condition is consistent with age and use, with attractive surface patina and honest wear to the timber shaft and handle, commensurate with age and handling. The silver mount remains particularly well preserved, with clear decoration, crisp engraving, and legible hallmarks. Length: 76 cm.
A refined and characterful late Victorian silver-mounted presentation cane, combining decorative appeal with period historical interest.
