Description from the seller
Silver-plated metal coffee pot made in France by Christofle for the airline Air France, dating from the 1960s.
This piece features a modernist design with clean, elegant lines, inspired by the Art Deco style. It is adorned with Air France’s famous emblem: the “winged hippocampus,” finely engraved.
The winged hippocampus — nicknamed “the shrimp” by company staff — has been Air France’s historic emblem since 1933. Heir to Air Orient, it symbolizes both the sea, travel and aviation: a creature half horse, half fish, with wings.
This coffee pot was very likely commissioned by Air France to outfit its premium on-board service, notably in first class and possibly aboard the Concorde on certain prestigious routes. Christofle indeed supplied many pieces of silverware and tableware for major airlines and French luxury services during this period. However, it is difficult to say with certainty that this specific model was used on the Concorde without archival documentation or proven provenance.
The piece is in excellent overall condition.
