Description from the seller
African Tribal Art - Ci Wara Crest Mask Bamana
In the center and south of Mali, this sculpture represents the Ci Wara antelope-horse, nicknamed the "beast of the earth." For the Bambara, or "Bamana," designated as "believers" by Muslims, this mythical figure is said to have taught humanity the art of agriculture and offered the first grain. The crest was fixed to a raffia-woven hat by raffia ties.
Worn on the top of the head, these crests accompanied the dancers during the tòn rites, a society dedicated to agricultural work. The masks leaped across the fields to repel nyama, these evil energies, to detect threats and drive away harmful spirits capable of stealing the soul of cultivated plants or robbing their vital force.
