Peridot, also called chrysolite, is a particularly pure variety of the mineral olivine. The bright green, transparent mineral is used as a gemstone.

Peridot is the magnesium-rich variety of olivine (forsterite) with a composition that approaches Mg2SiO4. Its crystals are orthorhombic, and its hardness is slightly lower than that of quartz.

Peridot is of light green color with a range from yellow-green to olive green. There are also brownish varieties known. Peridot is sometimes confused with emerald and other green gemstones, such as chrysoberyl, diopside, moldavite as well as garnet (demantoid), quartz (prasiolite, prasem) and tourmaline varieties (chromolith, verdelite).

Already in the Old Testament Peridot (as pitdah) is mentioned, and in ancient Rome the stone was valued as an “Evening Emerald” because it can be easily lit by lamp light. In the Middle Ages Peridot often belonged to church jewelry; presumably Peridot stones were brought to Europe by Crusaders. The stone was attributed healing powers, as well as the power to ward off evil spirits.
