Walking cane dating to the late Qing/Republic period (ca. 1910–1920), with a curved dark water buffalo horn handle and a turned hardwood shaft, measuring 90 cm in height and 12 cm in width.
Description from the seller
Period: Late Qing Dynasty / Republican period.
Antique Chinese walking cane with a fire ball. Probably an import for France.
Refined and eclectic antique walking stick dating from the Republican era.
The most precious and original element is the curved handle in dark water-buffalo horn, finely hand-carved.
The pommel ends with a striking symbolic depiction: a stylized creature reminiscent of a dragon or a mythical bird that clamps a light-colored contrasting sphere, bone, evoking the classic Asian iconography of the “flaming pearl” or “fire ball,” a symbol of wisdom, spiritual energy, and prosperity.
The shaft is made of turned solid wood with a splendid warm natural grain, connected to the handle by an elegant clear spacer ring. The lower tip features its original dark protective finish.
Shaft material: premium wood with visible grain.
Condition: Generally good overall condition. It shows a magnificent patina of time that attests to its authenticity and era. Solid construction and straight shaft—see photographs for a better impression.
Chinese walking sticks from this period with zoomorphic horn handles are highly collectible. The presence of the pearl/fire ball makes the item not only a refined accessory of bygone elegance but a true conversation piece rich in cultural symbolism. Perfect for antique cane collectors (faleristics/dog-keeping) or lovers of Oriental antique.
This item was inherited from my grandparents; I have nothing further to add.
In excellent overall condition with signs of wear over time—see photographs for a better impression.
