Katsuhiro Otomo (b. 1954) is one of the most important creators in contemporary manga. He is the author of Akira (1982–1990), a masterpiece that blends cyberpunk, politics, social critique and a revolutionary aesthetic. The 1988 animated film, directed by Otomo himself, is considered one of the major turning points in Japanese animation on an international scale.
This poster, published by 1000 Editions in 2001, is part of the official Akira art reprints released in the late 1990s and early 2000s, coinciding with the resurgence of manga in Europe and the renewed appreciation of Otomo’s work.
An interesting detail is that Otomo is known for being obsessive about detail—so much so that in Akira there are scenes where he personally drew entire buildings line by line because no assistant could reproduce exactly what he had in mind. This visual perfection is one of the reasons why Akira’s imagery—especially in official posters—is so iconic and collectible.
