Description from the seller
Exceptionally rare title-page copy by Graciela Iturbide, unique and unavailable as a signed copy and extremely rare as an unsigned copy. 140 pages and 84 black-and-white photographs printed full-bleed or, for some, double-page; Spanish text by Marta Gili. Black cloth binding with the title debossed in white on the back and with a mounted photograph on the cover. In excellent condition, practically like new.
Graciela Iturbide was born in Mexico City in 1942. At the end of the 1960s she began studying cinema and, in the early 1970s, while she was assisting Manuel Álvarez Bravo, she trained in photography and soon devoted herself to it. During a trip to Europe at that time she met Henri Cartier-Bresson, who had a major influence on her work. This photograph book, both subtle and powerful, blends evocative scenes from the multiple subcultures of Iturbide’s native Mexico with the artist’s deeply personal, often surreal vision. Iturbide’s work fuses history, lyricism, and portraiture. She strongly addresses the themes of identity and difference. The earth cracked by the sun contrasts with children's games, austere walls with ornate altars, everyday life with celebrations. These oppositions reveal deeper conflicts related to the nature of the territory and the body.
