Description from the seller
Sarreguemines Art Deco Faience Basket — France, 1930s
A charming and highly decorative faience basket produced by the renowned Sarreguemines manufactory in France during the Art Deco period of the 1930s. The piece immediately stands out through its vibrant turquoise-blue glaze contrasted with delicate yellow floral motifs, creating a joyful yet elegant composition characteristic of French decorative arts between the wars.
The sculptural openwork design with flowing wave-like bands and stylised flowers reflects the playful geometry and refined craftsmanship of the Art Deco era, while the softly crackled glaze (natural craquelure) gives the object warmth and authenticity. This craquelure is entirely typical and desirable for vintage faience pieces of the period, enhancing its decorative character and historic charm.
The basket remains in very good condition considering its age, with only gentle traces of time consistent with an object approaching 100 years old. Its fresh and timeless colour palette allows it to blend beautifully not only into Art Deco interiors, but also into contemporary and minimalist homes.
Originally intended as a decorative serving or presentation basket, today it can be used in many elegant ways: as a fruit or berry basket, for sweets and pastries, or as a beautiful centrepiece for floral arrangements. A versatile and authentic French decorative object combining practicality with timeless design.
Sarreguemines was one of the most celebrated French faience manufactories, internationally known for combining artistic innovation with high-quality ceramic production. During the Art Deco years, the factory produced some of the most colourful and expressive ceramic designs in France, many of which remain highly collectible today for their unmistakable style and decorative appeal.
