Russian Orthodox brass icon “Adoration of Christ” – 19th century
Beautiful Russian Orthodox brass icon featuring a central depiction of Christ, surrounded by saints and worshipping figures, rendered in relief. This type of icon was used as a home icon and devotional object within the Russian Orthodox tradition.
Description
The icon shows Christ at the center with a halo, standing on a raised platform and surrounded by saints and kneeling believers in adoration. The symmetrical composition and the rich figurative detailing give the whole piece a strong spiritual aura. Above the scene are partially legible Cyrillic inscriptions, characteristic of Orthodox cast icons from Russia.
The surface is fully executed in brass with a fine natural patina, created by age and long use. The refined detailing of the faces, robes and halos testifies to the craftsmanship of specialized Russian ateliers from the 19th century.
At the top there is an integrated hanging eye, by which the object could originally be secured as a home icon or devotional wall piece. Due to its compact size and strong religious symbolism, this type of icon formed an important part of personal Orthodox devotional culture.
