Description from the seller
Russian Orthodox brass Deesis icon with red enamel – 19th century
Beautiful Russian Orthodox brass icon with a depiction of the Deesis: central Christ Pantocrator, flanked by the Mother of God and John the Baptist. The icon is rendered in relief and equipped with red enamel, typical for Russian casting icons from the 19th century.
Description
The icon shows central Christ Pantocrator seated on a throne, with a raised blessing hand and Gospel book. On either side are the Mother of God and John the Baptist in a praying posture, in accordance with traditional Deesis iconography within the Orthodox Church. This depiction symbolizes the intercession of Mary and John for humanity before Christ.
Above the central scene there is an additional image of Christ within an elevated crown. The background is richly decorated with red enamel, providing a vivid contrast to the warm brass relief and the finely worked details of the figures and garments.
The composition, refined execution, and the use of enamel are characteristic of Russian Orthodox cast icons produced in specialized ateliers for home devotion and personal prayer. The compact size and integrated hanging indicate use as a home icon or small devotional object.
