Description from the seller
Russian Orthodox travel icon / triptych with the Mother of God of Kazan – 19th century
Special Russian Orthodox brass travel icon in a triptych form featuring at the center the Mother of God of Kazan with the Christ Child, surrounded by various saints and feast day depictions. This type of foldable icon was used as a personal devotional object and travel altar within the Orthodox tradition.
Description
The central panel shows the Mother of God of Kazan with the Christ Child, one of the most revered iconographic types within the Russian Orthodox Church. Around the presentation are Cyrillic inscriptions and a geometrically edged border. The Mother of God is depicted with a restrained expression while the Christ Child blesses the faithful.
The side panels contain multiple miniature depictions of saints and Biblical scenes, executed in fine relief. At the top there is a crown with a Christ depiction and decorative ornamentation, flanked by stylized animal figures. The hinged construction made it possible to fold the icon compactly for transport and protection during travel.
The whole is executed in brass with a beautiful dark patina, formed by age and long use. The refined detailing and complex composition are typical of Russian cast icons from the 19th century, produced in specialized workshops for personal prayer and devotional use.
