Description from the seller
Museum-quality Abbevillian Hand Axe (300,000-600,000 years old) – Abbeville
France
Description: For the serious collector of early European prehistory: an extremely rare, historically documented hand axe / Levallois core from the Early Paleolithic.
This masterpiece comes from the world-famous site of Abbeville (Somme valley, France), the absolute cradle of prehistoric archaeology.
Unique documented provenance (Provenance): The object on the back bears two authentic, old Dutch collector labels with the designation: “Abbevillian” “Levallois-! CORE Early Paleolithic.” This means that this tool was not made by Neanderthals, but by the even older Homo heidelbergensis (or early Homo erectus).
The estimated age is between 300,000 and 600,000 years old. This makes it a tangible remnant from the very earliest human occupation of Europe.
Features & Condition:
Findspot: Abbeville, Somme, France.
Period: Early Paleolithic (Abbevillian / Early Acheulean).
Material: Beautiful brown flint (silex) with a stunning naturally glossy surface (desert patina), acquired by hundreds of thousands of years in the soil of the Somme terraces.
Technique: Clear, coarse prehistoric flaking around with preservation of the original cortex at the base for a good hand grip.
Condition: Fully intact, 100% authentic and without modern damage.
Dimensions:
Length: 16 cm
Width: 10 cm
Thickness: 4 cm
Weight: 560 grams
Note: The shown plexiglass stand is for illustration and is not included.
