Jiro Taniguchi (1947–2017) is one of the most respected authors of auteur manga. His style is known for its sensitivity, realistic detail, measured pacing, and humanist perspective. Works such as The Walking Man, A Distant Neighborhood, and The Magic Mountain have been highly appreciated in Europe, where Taniguchi enjoyed particularly notable success.
This poster corresponds to an illustration by Taniguchi published in 2005, the year in which Ponent Mon —a publisher specializing in auteur manga— released several European editions of his works. These prints were often associated with exhibitions, fairs, or limited editions aimed at collectors. Promised Land is therefore an illustration or standalone graphic piece, not a manga series or published volume.
Taniguchi was one of the few mangaka who also considered a European audience in his work. In fact, he collaborated with French authors and frequently exhibited at European festivals. His style, often compared to European comics, led France and Spain to regard him almost as a “local author.”
