Description from the seller
Russian Orthodox brass icon with feast-day scenes and enamel – 19th century
Special Russian Orthodox brass icon with multiple religious scenes in relief, richly decorated with blue, turquoise, and white enamel. This type of composite icon belongs to the traditional Russian cast icons and was used as a home icon and devotional object within the Orthodox faith tradition.
Description
The icon is constructed from multiple panels featuring various Biblical and liturgical scenes, executed in fine relief. In the upper crowning there is a central holy figure or Christ presentation under an architectural frame with church domes and angel figures. The four rectangular compartments underneath show diverse feast-day and saintly scenes, richly filled with figures, halos, and symbolic elements.
The background is richly provided with blue, turquoise, and white enamel, creating a lively contrast with the warm brass surface. Due to age and use the enamel shows clear wear and local losses, giving the object a pronounced historical character.
The Gothic-appearing upper part and the refined detailing of the compositions are typical of Russian Orthodox cast icons from the 19th century. Such icons were produced in specialized workshops and served as spiritual protective objects and aids for personal prayer.
