Description from the seller
Russian Orthodox brass icon of Christ Pantocrator with blue and white enamel – 19th century
Lovely Russian Orthodox brass icon depicting Christ Pantocrator, rendered in relief and richly decorated with blue and white enamel. This type of icon is among the most central and revered depictions within the Orthodox tradition and was used as a household icon and devotional object.
Description
The icon shows Christ Pantocrator facing forward with nimbus, blessing right hand, and an opened Gospel book. This iconography symbolizes Christ as heavenly ruler and teacher of the world. Surrounding the depiction are Cyrillic inscriptions and a richly decorated frame with floral and geometric motifs.
The background and ornate border are finished in deep blue and white enamel, creating a strong contrast with the warm brass relief. The refined ornamentation and the detailed rendering of the face, the halo, and the Gospel book testify to high-quality craftsmanship from specialized Russian ateliers.
At the top there are two mounting points, suitable for its original use as a wall icon or as part of an iconostasis. Due to age and use the enamel shows localized wear and losses, which give the object an authentic historical character.
