Description from the seller
Beautiful Russian Orthodox brass travel icon in triptych form, with a central Deësis depiction of Christ Pantocrator, flanked by the Mother of God and John the Baptist. The side panels show additional saints in high relief. This type of portable icon was used as a personal devotional object and travel altar within the Orthodox faith tradition.
Description
The central panel shows Christ Pantocrator seated on a throne, with an uplifted blessing hand and an open Gospel. On either side are the Mother of God and John the Baptist in a prayerful posture, in accordance with the traditional Deësis iconography in which they intercede for humanity.
The side panels contain saints’ figures with Cyrillic inscriptions, carefully worked out in fine relief. The composition radiates calm and symmetry and reflects the spiritual focus of Russian Orthodox devotional objects from the 19th century.
Thanks to the hinged construction, the icon could be compactly folded and safely carried during travels or pilgrimages. Such travel icons were popular with believers as portable altars for personal prayer and protection on the road.
The brass surface has developed a beautiful natural patina with age, giving extra depth and character to the relief. The sober yet refined execution is typical of Russian casting icons produced in specialized workshops.
