The Hat: This style of formal men's accessory in silk or structured felt reached the height of its popularity during the 19th century and the early 20th century. It was the ultimate symbol of social status, formality, and elegance for high society and nighttime events, such as opera outings. The Folding Version (Gibus): Many of these old models had an internal mechanical spring-driven mechanism that allowed the crown to be folded down so it would lie completely flat. This innovation facilitated storage in theatre cloakrooms without damaging the structure.
The Case: The red base that serves as the image’s support is the traditional protective hatbox, made of pressed cardboard, molded to the exact shape of the brim to prevent damage during travel.
