Description from the seller
Historical Lot "The Salotto Rosso" of Florence (1874–1880) – Ubaldino Peruzzi & Emilia Toscanelli.
A fascinating ensemble of 7 historical documents (4 letters and 3 autograph visiting cards) centered around Giulio Franco, a Florentine intellectual and editor of the economic journal L'Economista, and the famous political and literary salon of the Peruzzi couple: the legendary "Salotto Rosso" (Red Salon), the beating heart of 19th-century Italian cultural and political life.
The lot includes:
1 Official letter signed by the Mayor of Florence, Ubaldino Peruzzi, November 11, 1874: Written on official letterhead ("Municipio di Firenze - Gabinetto Particolare del Sindaco"). Peruzzi (1822–1891), a prominent Minister of the Kingdom of Italy and Mayor of Florence, gratefully accepts his election as President of the newly founded "Società Adamo Smith", an association dedicated to free-market economic liberalism.
2 Autograph letter signed by Emilia Peruzzi (née Toscanelli), March 13, 1876: Written on her personal monogrammed stationery ("EP"). She cordially invites Mr. Franco to an intimate dinner with her and her husband.
3 Autograph letter signed by Emilia Peruzzi (née Toscanelli), n.d.: A short, lively note reminding Mr. Franco not to miss a private theatrical play being performed at their palace the following evening ("si recita in casa nostra").
4 Autograph visiting card of Ubaldino Peruzzi: With the handwritten note "Grazie!" (Thank you!).
5 Visiting card of Emilia Peruzzi: With a handwritten note in French regretting missing her visitor ("Mille regrets de ne pas vous avoir trouvé, je reviendrai").
A splendid lot for collectors of the Italian Risorgimento, Tuscan history, and the golden age of European literary salons.
Ubaldino Peruzzi de' Medici (Florence, April 2, 1822 – Antella, September 9, 1891) was an Italian politician. Son of Vincenzo Peruzzi (1789–1847), Gonfaloniere of Florence, and married to Emilia Toscanelli, he was mayor of Florence and one of the first ministers of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy.
Emilia Toscanelli Peruzzi (Pisa, February 14, 1827 – Antella, May 8, 1900) was an Italian patriot.
