Description from the seller
Ring of Australian opal / cabochon / new
Set in 925 sterling silver
Weight: 1.96 g
7.3 mm x 5.4 mm
New and unworn
Ring size:
U 54
UK N
US 6.8
Fr 14
Inner diameter: 17.2 mm
The opal is a mineral from the class of 'oxides and hydroxides'. As an amorphous solid, opal (similar to glass) has no crystal structure and usually appears as a massive vein filling or nodular formation.
Opals are processed exclusively as gemstones.
The word opal was borrowed from the Latin opalus or the Greek ὀπάλλιος opallios for 'precious stone' and presumably traces back to upala from Sanskrit. According to Allan W. Eckert in his work The World of Opals, this term was used for various rocks, while the early Magyars called opal mines opálbánya.
Opals were already regarded as especially valuable gemstones in antiquity, sometimes even valued higher than diamonds. Pliny the Elder wrote of them: "[...] it has a fire of carbunculus, the purple sparkle of amethyst, the sea-green of emerald, and an utterly incredible play of light."
