Antique Berber cloisonné‑enamel silver amulet box from Algeria (Cabilia region), dating ca. 1880–1930, with coral stones and coral surround, total weight 310 g, provenance from a private collection, in good used condition.
Description from the seller
Ancient Berber amulet box in cloisonné enamel silver – circa 1880–1930
Kabylie is a region of northern Algeria. The inhabitants of Kabylie constitute one of the largest divisions of the Berbers (indigenous tribes of North Africa). It is estimated that about 8 million Algerians today are of nomadic origin. The inhabitants of this mountainous region maintain a culture different from the rest of the country.
The history of Algerian jewelry dates back to prehistory. From the precious examples found on Algerian soil, time has brought to light more complete works, firmly rooted in antiquity and the Middle Ages.
Art of Kabylie
Kabylie jewelry is made mainly in blue, green, yellow and red colors (pure Mediterranean coral) and is always in silver.
The Kabylie region is known worldwide for the production of jewelry, whose origins date back to 1492. The popularity and exceptional quality of these creations are due to the unusual and fascinating use of enamel. The blue, green and red enamels create a dynamic contrast that fixes the pieces in place. Enamel is a substance composed of a very fine powder, usually sand, containing a minimum amount of potassium and sodium. These are finely ground and vitrified at high temperature.
The Kabylie enameling technique, which provides the precise delimitation of the parts of the jewelry to be colored, has its own character and method. The drawing is reproduced in silver wire and soldered onto a thin silver plate. The rough pieces are carefully decorated with enamel. The piece is left to dry at room temperature and then placed in an oven. Only after cooling will the enameling acquire its final brilliance.
Pieces from Kabylie are extremely exclusive and of very high economic value. This object comes from my private collection and has been housed for years, imported from a trip of mine, gentlemen. I offer it without reserve, leaving to you the widest judgment of beauty and rarity. Kabylie jewelry is always in pure silver, and the symbol under the box confirms this.
