Description from the seller
Unique and highly decorative wooden wall panel (Dummy Board) with a detailed allegorical depiction of "The Merchant" (De Koopman).
This characteristic panel is a beautiful satire on world trade. The image is inspired by the historical Costumes Grotesques (in which artisans are depicted, dressed in their own merchandise).
The merchant is ingeniously constructed here from historical trade goods and maritime elements:
Hat & Collar: Shaped as an open book with the text "Commerce & Navigation".
The collar mentions terms such as "Invoices" and "Expedition".
Clothing & Accessories: In his hand he holds a pot labeled "Caffe", with a reference to the famous insurance market "Lloyd's" on his sleeve. Over his arm hangs a luxurious roll of "Brocard" (Brocat/Velvet).
Merchandise:
At his feet and legs lie an hourglass, a pair of compasses, a bale of "Sel" (Salt), a cask labeled "Spice" (Spices) and a basket bottle labeled "Huile" (Oil).
The panel is artistically carved/relieved along the edges, including decorative painted tassels on the sides and an ornamental cartouche at the bottom with the text "The Merchant".
The backside is neatly finished with a classic reddish-brown protective coating and equipped with two handy recessed mounting eyes (keyhole system) allowing the panel to hang perfectly flat against the wall.
A striking object that fits superbly in a classical interior, a gentleman’s room, home office or as an eye-catcher in a shop or hospitality setting.
Condition:
In good vintage condition with light, characteristic signs of age (see detail photos) that contribute to the authentic look of the piece. No structural defects.
Dimensions & Weight:
Height: 75 cm.
Width: 23 cm.
Depth: 1.5 cm.
Weight: 875 grams.
The lot will be carefully packed and sent by registered, insured mail with a track-and-trace number.
Pickup by arrangement also possible.
