This 17th-century Delft faience plate is decorated in blue with figures in a landscape and features a Chinoiserie design.
Description from the seller
Delfts faience chinoiserie bord – 17e eeuw
A remarkable and historic Delft faience plate, dating from the 17th century, executed in a characteristic chinoiserie style. This type of earthenware reflects the strong influence of Chinese porcelain on Dutch ceramic production in the Golden Age.
The plate is decorated in underglaze blue with a lively depiction of figures in a landscape, surrounded by decorative panels with floral and figurative motifs. The composition and theme are inspired by Eastern examples, but executed in a typical Delft interpretation.
The rim shows clear signs of use and chips, appropriate to the great age of the piece, which contributes to its authentic character. Such plates were used both as wall decorations and, today, form important objects within the study of European ceramics.
A rare and collectible object that provides a beautiful example of the cultural exchange between East and West in the 17th century.
