Description from the seller
Delft Faience Chinoiserie Plate – 17th Century
A special and historic Delft faience plate, dating from the 17th century, executed in a characteristic chinoiserie style. This type of earthenware reflects the strong influence of Chinese porcelain on Dutch ceramic production in the Golden Age.
The plate is decorated in blue underglaze with a lively depiction of figures in a landscape, surrounded by decorative panels with floral and figurative motifs. The composition and theme are inspired by Oriental examples, but executed in a typical Delft interpretation.
The edge shows clear signs of use and chips, appropriate to the plate’s great age, which contributes to its authentic character. Such plates were used both as wall decorations and today form important objects within the study of European ceramics.
A rare and collectible object that provides a beautiful example of cultural exchange between East and West in the 17th century.
