A 17th-century Dutch Delft faience plate in the Chinoiserie style, measuring 22 cm across and in good condition with slight signs of age.
Description from the seller
Delftware chinoiserie plate – 17th century
A special and historic Delft faience plate, dating from the 17th century, executed in a characteristic chinoiserie style. This type of pottery reflects the strong influence of Chinese porcelain on Dutch ceramic production in the Golden Age.
The plate is decorated in underglaze blue with a vibrant depiction of floral motifs, surrounded by decorative panels with floral motifs. The composition and theme are inspired by Eastern examples, but executed in a typical Delft interpretation.
The edge shows clear signs of use and chips, appropriate to the plate’s great age, which contributes to its authentic character. Such plates were used both as wall decor and today form important objects within the study of European ceramics.
A rare and collectible object that provides a beautiful example of cultural exchange between East and West in the 17th century.
