Louis XVI‑style silver oil and vinegar set from France, dating to ca. 1786–1789, by Claude-François Varmé, in .950 silver weighing 934 g (1358 g total with two crystal decanters) and measuring about 27 × 27 cm, complete with two crystal decanters with silver stoppers and chains, one decanter with a crack, and condition described as reasonable and heavily used with possible missing small parts.
Description from the seller
Extraordinary museum-grade silver oil and vinegar set in refined Louis XVI style, dating from the late 18th century. This monumental ensemble consists of a richly decorated silver holder, crowned by an urn-shaped spice compartment. The holder is executed with classical acanthus leaf motifs and garlands. It rests on four elegantly formed feet, giving the object a stately and architectural appearance.
The set is complete with the two original crystal decanters, fitted with silver stoppers that are attached to the holder by chains. When in use, the stoppers can be neatly placed in the designated holders, a typical functional and decorative element from the late 18th century.
The silverware is finely worked and engraved, testifying to high craftsmanship. The piece bears the master mark CFV of silversmith Claude-François Varmé, active from 1756 to 1789. In addition, the piece is stamped with the Contremarque (Poinçon de Recense), a tax mark applied during a change of tax farmer (fermier général) to re-register previously marked silver, the year letter P for 1787 and the Paris city mark.
The silver weight amounts to no less than 934 grams, with a total weight of 1358 grams including the crystal decanters. The generous dimensions of 27 × 27 cm emphasize the representational and ceremonial character of this object.
Condition note: one of the crystal decanters has a crack, appropriate to its age and use; this does not detract from the museum value of the silverware.
